Termination Determination: Is Every Choice An Ethical Choice?

A woman's legal right to choose abortion is paramount to her human rights - but is it conditional?

Next@19th's New Sanhedrin is a modern system of argument based on the principles of the original Sanhedrin of the early Rabbis. Programs address today's most challenging issues. All are welcome: come vote with their feet, moving from side to side as the arguments progress.

According to your own personal ethic, in each case is the termination of pregnancy warranted or not?

Case #1. A woman has been advised by her physician that her pregnancy jeopardizes her life. If she carries full term, there is a strong likelihood that she will not survive, though the baby might. You have before you an affidavit from the physician to that effect.

Case #2. A married woman is pregnant with her first child. Tests are done which determine the child will be severely deformed and likely not live into adulthood.

Case #3. A married woman is pregnant with her first child. Tests are done which determine the child will be born with an apparent physical defect which will not hinder the child from developing normally otherwise, but will put additional child rearing burdens upon the parents.

Case #4. A married woman is pregnant and already has two children of the same sex. She and her partner desire a child of the opposite sex, and only one more child. Tests are done which determine the third child will be of the same sex as the two they have already.

Case #5. A married woman with three children is unexpectedly pregnant. The family is economically hard pressed and is having difficulty getting by with a gross income of $36,500. They doubt if they can maintain their lifestyle with a fourth child.

Case #6. A married woman with three children is unexpectedly pregnant. The family gross income is $280,000 per year. They doubt if they can maintain their lifestyle with a fourth child.

Case #7. A married woman is a graduate student seeking a professional degree. She finds herself unexpectedly pregnant for the first time. She and her partner want children, but if she has this child now, it will cause at least a two year delay in completing her degree.

Case #8. A married woman is unexpectedly pregnant. She and her partner have made vacation plans. The delivery date interferes with those plans.

    Bravo!

Big thanks to all the musicians, free-styling paraders, partners and passers-by for a smashingly successful accordion Invasion on May 18! Relive the blast that was had thanks to the great coverage by Charlotte Libov and Colleen Dougher.
